Move aside, Boracay. There’s a new Philippine island that gained the top spot in this year’s list of best islands in the world outside the U.S. by Conde Nast Traveler.

Our very own Siargao in Surigao del Norte was chosen by the readers of the luxury traveler magazine as the best island in Asia for 2018. Conde Nast Traveler releases this list every October and for this year, they shook things up a bit by naming the best islands per region instead of compiling the best islands in the world outside the U.S. as was their previous format.

In addition to Siargao, two other local islands copped the second and third ranks in the list of best islands in Asia. Following Siargao at number two is Boracay, which was last year’s number one best island in the world and is set to re-open this October 26 after a six-month rehabilitation by the government. At third place is Palawan, which garnered the third spot as well in last year’s list.

Siargao may be known as the “surfing capital of the Philippines”, but it has remained a secret haven for surfers and beach bums until recently when commercial airlines started offering direct flights. In addition to its surfing scene, Siargao has much to offer when it comes to tourist spots and attractions. From white sand beaches and virgin islands to lagoons with stingless jellyfishes and mysterious caves, this island has a lot in store for visitors.

So what are you waiting for? Now that the secret’s out, it’s time to visit Siargao before it gets too crowded. And when you get there, then you can finally say that you’ve been to one of the best islands in the world!
